West Yorkshire is one of England's landlocked counties and a metropolitan county that was formed in 1974. Located in the Yorkshire and the Humber region, it has a population of around 2.2 million, who live in five metropolitan boroughs—Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. It has an area of 2,029 square kilometres.
The counties bordered by West Yorkshire are Lancashire, North Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. It is rich in magnesian limestone and is situated on rocks of carboniferous age. Its steep-sided valleys, roads, railways, canals and scenic countryside give it a unique and dramatic identity that is not present in other counties. The rivers Calder and Aire, which flow from west to east, are the ones that drain the whole area.
The county's climate is oceanic, which is the same as the majority of the UK. However, it is usually colder than the counties in the south, owing to its higher, inland location. Snow and sub-zero temperatures are commonplace, and many rivers have frozen over at some point.
There are plenty of places of interest in the county. It has historic locations, beautiful waterways, museums and breathtaking natural environments where fauna and flora can grow freely. You will easily find places to spend quality time here.
